Sharon Poliakine, the winner in the established painter category, presents works from the past year in which she uses different techniques including drawing, painting and sculpting. Oren Eliav, the recipient of the young Israeli painter award, deals in his works with time and with disturbance of vision, giving emphasis to that which us invisible and cannot be touched.
Dining Out – New Places in Tel Aviv
Here is a snippet of two recently opened places: a restaurant and a patisserie.
Lashuk ("to the market" in loose translation) is a new restaurant that aims to bring the spirit of the market straight to Dizengoff Square. The menu is comprised of simple dishes based on fresh produce including vegetables and fish. The general vibe of the restaurant is one of Jaffa in the 60s and 70s. To top it all there will also be a bar contributing to the general feel-good mood adding the nightlife element and making Lashuk a place to come for both dinner and drinks (Lashuk, 92 Dizengoff st., Tel Aviv).
After years working as a pastry chef at the best Israeli restaurants, Naama Steier decided it was about time she opened her own place and so Amalia café came to be. The chosen place was Jaffa, and some of the treats you can find there are chocolate towers filled with passion fruit cream, a white chocolate mousse covered cheese cake, and Naama's own interpretation to the black forest cake (Amalia Café, 2 Nechama St., Jaffa).
May Holidays
Independence Day (Yom Ha'atzma'ut)
This year, Israel will mark its 63rd year of independence on May 10th. Celebrations start the night before. Expect to see many people out on the streets (especially in Florentin Neighborhood and in Rabin Square) and a firework display that will light up the sky in a myriad of colors. The next day, you can take part in the national Israeli sport: BBQ (Mangal, in Hebrew) in Hayarkon Park. If that is not a proper way to spend independence day, we don't know what is.
Lag Ba'omer
A holiday most famous (or notorious, depends who you ask) for the traditional bonfires will take place on the eve of May 21st. The bonfires are said to symbolize the revealing of Jewish mysticism writings by Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai.
