Tel Aviv Highlights – August 2011

Tel Aviv Highlights – August 2011

August is the cruelest month. But only because it is the hottest month. Other than that, there are plenty of treats, as usual.

Interpol Concert
Often compared to Joy Division, Interpol is one of the most famous post-punk bands today. Hailing from New York City, Interpol's most recent album (their 4th) came out in September 2010 to generally favorable critical reception. The band's concert in Israel is part of its major international tour, during which they will perform at the biggest festivals in Europe (August 30th, Tel Aviv Exhibition Grounds, 229-299 NIS).

Jaffa Flea Market nights
Already a summer tradition, The Jaffa flea market is brought to life on Thursday nights with numerous arts and crafts stalls, street theatre, night tours, concerts and art exhibitions. (Thursdays at 20:00, through August 18th, Jaffa Flea Market).

Mahol Lohet dance festival 2011
It is dance fever in Tel Aviv, as the city is quietly becoming the dance capital of the world. After last month's World Dance festival, which took place at the exhibition grounds, this month's festival is all staying at home: the Suzanne Dellal dance centre. 60 works of Israeli choreographers and companies will be showcased, 20 of which will be making their debut performance. Dance genres that will be featured include Flamenco, African dance and experimental dance among others (through August 27th, Suzanne Dellal Dance Centre).

Animation and Comics Festival
The 11th Animation and Comics Festival will showcase hundreds of animated films (full length and short, for adults and for children), workshops, talks, comic books fair. Some of this year's highlights include a special animation program featuring an orchestra performance of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, and a program dedicated to the Pink Panther (August 16th-20th, Tel Aviv Cinematheque, 37-42 NIS).
